Once on This Island, Jr.
By Georgia Bernhard This year, Thompson's school musical was Once on This Island, Jr., which tells the story of a play (a play within a play) about a Caribbean island and the gods that govern it. There’s two sides on the island: that of the wealthy Grandhommes, who enjoy luxury in their elegant mansions, and the impoverished peasants, who just try and survive the next hurricane. They do this by cautiously making sure to not displease the gods, of which they constantly pray to: Erzulie, goddess of love; Agwe, god of water; Asaka, god of the earth; and Papa Ge, god of death. The story is about a little girl named Ti Moune, who is spared by these gods during one especially vicious storm, then found by two elderly peasants who she comes to know as her parents. The play fast forwards to an adult Ti Moune, who’s not completely content with her quaint life on the island, wanting more. She sees the opportunity to find her meaning when she discovers Daniel, who she found after crashing his car. But there's just one thing… he's a Grandhomme. In her perseverance and fierce faithfulness, Ti Moune heals then falls in love with Daniel, despite gossip and cultural taboo. But trouble in paradise arises when he breaks shocking news— he has an arranged marriage, to a fellow Grandhomme! What will happen with Daniel and Ti Moune? Once on This Island, Jr. was performed on March 11 at 7 pm and March 12 at 7 pm. |

Different Clubs in Thompson Part I
By Sydney Jones
There are many different clubs in Thompson Middle School that you may have never heard about. Sixth, seventh, and eighth grade have many different options on what they can do after school other than sports. There is a Chess Club, an Environmental Club, a Newspaper Club, math contests, and a Stem Club, all available for all grades. There are more clubs, but they only allow certain grades. One like this is the Yearbook Club with Mr.Freeman. This club is open to eighth graders only. Our clubs are very special with caring teachers that work hard to make each club fun for all students. I would like to thank all staff and students that put together each club to make Thompson Middle School a better environment for all students.
To start with, the Chess club is an awesome place to put your brain in a strategy mode and compete against different peers. This game has millions of people playing it worldwide. This club meets every Tuesday after school until April 28th from 2:45-3:30 P.M. Run by Mr. Carlo, you are allowed to join whenever you want to have fun with your friends as well as make new ones. This is a great opportunity to be able to put your mind to work and use strategy for fun.
After that, the Environmental Club gets you thinking about the world's problems and how to fix them. You will learn about the environment’s problems, such as plastic pollution. About eight million pieces of plastic weighing about 269,000 tons ends up in the ocean per year. By 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish. This club is trying to encourage Thompson to step up their act and start recycling more often. They are trying to do this by doing a contest between the grades on who can recycle the most. There are three Trex recycling boxes in the cafeteria, one for each grade. A recent idea has sparked a fundraiser- celebrating the Earth’s 50th Earth day anniversary. You can buy tee-shirts for 11 dollars each. The extra money they collect will be put towards more recycling bins in each classroom. Come join and help make a difference.
Another club open to all grades is the Newspaper Club. In this club, you will write articles or create drawings for the fall, winter, and spring. You will publish each edition and give one to teachers around the school. All meetings are on Wednesday from 2:45-3:30. Each time we publish an issue, we get a publishing party! This consists of pizza, cookies, and other delicious snacks to celebrate another issue published! Eighth grade students in this club are allowed to be student editors, which means that they are able to edit and preview everybody’s work. You can write or draw about school activities, in and out of school, as well as events going on in Middletown. This is a great club to get words onto paper and discover a new love of writing or art.
Next, there are the math contests. These competitions are run by Mrs. Martino. Every few weeks, there will be different contests to test your knowledge in math. Most schools compete in this activity as well. Thompson has gotten very good scores, and when you participate in this, you show that you really care about school and your mathematical skills. A lot of places have this club around the district and are very talented. Meeting a few times each month for each grade, this is a good way to test your skills and see how smart you really are.
Finally, the last but not the least club is the Stem Club. Stem is made up of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Run by Mrs.VanFechtmann, they meet every other Thursday after school from 2:45-3:30. In this club, you are able to choose from a few different Stem activities. These options include a large variety of fun things such as 3D printing, Tinkercad, MakeyMakey, Lego WeDo 2.0, K'NEX, Lego Mindstorms, and a bunch of different design challenges. Club members are allowed to work in a small group or as an individual. Many tools require a lot of brain power and thinking, so power on your Stem brain and get working!
In conclusion, there is a large variety of clubs for all grades in Thompson. Once again, there are the Chess Club, the Environmental Club, the Newspaper Club, the math contests, and the Stem Club; all available for all grades. There are more clubs, but they only allow certain grades. Our clubs are very special with wonderful teachers, working hard to have clubs that are enjoyable for all students. Let's give a big shout out to the Thompson staff for helping make the school a loving, happy, and safe place for all students.
