Thompson Group - Jazz Band
By Mary Kate Welch
Jazz Band is a group of musicians in the Thompson Band who are chosen by audition. Each year, there is an opportunity for seventh and eighth graders to audition for Jazz Band. Those who make it in have practice every Friday at 7:15 AM. We practice music for the winter and spring concerts, and this year we were going to compete as our own group at the Music in the Parks competition, but the trip was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In past years, the only groups that competed were the Lion and Gold Bands (of the band classes), but Mrs. Raguseo felt that we were ready to compete as our own group, and it would have been an exciting experience.
Jazz Band allows its members to feel more independent since there aren’t nearly as many musicians in it as there are in a normal concert band. There are solos in nearly every song we play, and it’s a good opportunity for the soloist or soloists to test their abilities and skills. I was lucky to have two solos in the Winter Concert. It was nerve-racking, but definitely worth the experience! Each Friday at practice, we would be challenged to sound and look our best while playing. It is worth every early morning and after school practice session to hear our small segment of the concert come together. We all support and push each other to play and be our best, and we have fun learning new songs and skills while doing it! Of course, because of the COVID-19 outbreak, we aren’t able to come together as a whole group, but everyone in Jazz Band is encouraged to practice at home and try to perfect our music for when the concert will, hopefully, arrive!

Summer Reading Recommendations
By Krista Landsman
Although summer reading is a requirement, here are some books that can help to make it seem less like a requirement and more like an activity!
Mystery. If you're looking for an intense mystery book to invest in, I suggest When by Victoria Laurie. The main character, Maddie Flynn, is a shy high school junior who has an intuitive ability cursed upon herself. She sees numbers above every person she encounters. It only takes her father's death to prove to Maddie and her family that these numbers are death dates. As a way to make money, Maddie’s alcoholic mother uses her ability on other people. She cannot predict how or why the death happens. After correctly making a prediction of the death of a customer, the Law Enforcement involved her in a homicide investigation where more and more people disappeared and were found murdered. With a giant target on her back, her whole world is about to be turned upside down, can she change it before it’s too late? This is not a series.
Dystopian. If you’re hoping to read a futuristic, dystopian book this summer, Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi. Aria has lived her entire life under the protection of the dome of Reverie. She’s never thought of what lies beyond its doors. After the disappearance of her mother, Aria knows her chances of surviving in the outer wasteland long enough to find her are slim. When Aria meets Perry, a wild and dangerous outsider, they join together. If they can survive, they are each other's best hope for finding answers. This is a series.
Romance. If you are interested in a drama-filled romance book this summer, Love and Gelato by Jenna Evans Welch is the book for you! Lina’s mother's dying wish is for her to get to know her father in Italy. But if he’s so great, why has Lina never met him before? All Lina wants is to get back home until she is given a journal documenting her mother's adventures during her time in Italy. Suddenly Lina’s uncovering a magical world of secret romances, art, and hidden bakeries as well as meeting new people. She follows in her mother's footsteps with the help of her friends that will change everything she knew about her mother, her father—and even herself. This is not a series.
